RAF Hunsdon, as Hunsdon Airfield was once known, became operational in 1941. The first unit to arrive at the Airfield (in May 1941) was No. 85 Squadron RAF, flying Boston Havocs.. In June No. 1451 Flight RAF was formed. This experimental unit flew Bostons with searchlights fitted in the nose of the aircraft. This experiment was not successful and the unit was reformed as No. 530 Squadron RAF

Flew into Hunsdon on Sunday April 1st (no, not an April Fool). Fabulous little airfield. Very friendly people. Well worth the effort, but you must have PPR RIGHT UNDER STANSTEAD - talk to the instructors by phone first & they will sort it for you.

Work was overseen by Wing Commander Pike. The runways and perimeter track were built by George Wimpey and Sons. The width of the perimeter track was 35 feet, and the runways were of the standard 150 foot.
